I have a number that I have looked up in telcodata.us and it leads to level3. Does anyone knwo of a way to find out if a number is voip or not? Thank you

| you didn't look up a number, you looked up an area code and exchange combination. there are no free online resources where you can enter a full 10 digit number to determine the current provider. you will have to contact a CLEC or one of your VOIP partners and ask them to look it up for you. |

| All true.
But if a number is Level3 or XO or Broadwing, etc., isn't it pretty good odds that it is VoIP? Not definitive proof, but quite likely.
The results of checking on »gizmo5.com/pc/backdoor/ might also be somewhat useful, especially if there is a match. If no match, then it could go either way. |

Those companies have quite a number of commercial clients with traditional TDM services ... I have customers with DID blocks on all 3 (2 really, because Broadwing is owned by Level 3 and does not operate separately anymore).
If in a major metro area, and the number belongs to a residence, I'll agree quite likely. But the full 10 digit number could have been ported to POTS or cell, oror the number could be a dialup modem or pager (they're still out there), or it could be in an area without E911 support, or it could be in a market that is expensive to serve so a VOIP provider might not be buying that market from Level 3. |

| reply to kieranmullen Those lookup options are designed to find out which company currently owns or provisions the number, and are service agnostic. Any given number could have started out as a traditional landline, and over several years of porting switched to voip, cellular, and back again. What specific technology or platform it's on should be a matter between the subscriber and his/her carrier of choice. |

| reply to kieranmullen I remember someone posting a site that did exactly this a while back. If I remember right, you got 5 lookups per 24 hours. It would report back voip, cellular, B&M, etc... It even broke down the voip as confirmed address or not.
I'll check my bookmarks at work. |

Backdoor search doesn't match for most VoIP #s I've searched. In my experience, it has matched more cell #s than VoIP #s. |

While they attempt to do this, it seems like all they do is parse the NPA-NXX-N provider. |

| reply to RockyBB I get many fraudulent buys over the internet. Paypal protected or Google Checkout merchant protected doesnt support virtual goods. I call back the people to veriy the purchase. I require a number (be it work a friend or theirs) in the same state at least of the verified credit card.
There are 3rd party services that do this for a fee. My system is far from perfect, yes I still know I am wide open for fraudulent charges... but it is all I can do right now short of a check or mo. -- KieranMullen »360oregon.com Betamax/Voipbuster Reseller »infocalls.net/vouchers IP/Website Tools »ip.drlinky.com |

| Do yourself a BIG favor and don't rely on phone numbers for this. There is no real way to know if the number is VoIP or if the user is in the same country. We get guys signing up with a "real" local DID, but when we call we get someone in Egypt.

| reply to nitzan Hello as mentioned in the previous post I knew my system was not perfect and has its flaws. However the article you gave could really be summarized as "check ips and check for proxies" "find it 100% of the time" Should that not be the goal of anyone to find it as much as they can? Hmm I feel today I will only catch 50% of the fraud today???
Not mentioned in your article is that people can and have been running anonymous proxies on their own computers quite easily through Java based programs such as »anon.inf.tu-dresden.de/index_en.html
No knowledge is required. So that order that was placed from a Comcast address... sorry it was Egypt...
Again it comes a combination of the sources.
Again this topic was lead astray, it was not supposed to be about our techniques or our process or what we do or what I sell. Just about the subject...
