Firm notes smartphone users see three times the number of dropped calls...
(old news - 08:58AM Friday Feb 19 2010)
tags: business · wireless · consumers
J.D. Power And Associates' latest study once again gives great love to Verizon Wireless, ranking the carrier tops for call quality in five of six geographical regions tracked by the firm (you can see each region broken down here). AT&T continues their trend of coming in last place in most markets. The firm surveyed 24,300 wireless phone subscribers between July and December 2009. In a statement the firm notes that their study found that overall, sound and connectivity problems have "increased considerably in 2010" alongside the number of dropped calls experienced by consumers. According to J.D. Power, smartphone customers are three times as likely to experience dropped calls as standard phone users.

US Cellular was #1 in

the North Central region.
There were the one carrier that beat VZ Wireless.

How much did that cost Verizon?

I'm on the phone regularly with VZW customers as it's who our company uses.

Their call quality is not the best. Far from it.

Definitely the NOTwork.

Re: How much did that cost Verizon?

Exactly. You have to pay JD Powers to use that. Which to mean cancels any validity.
"Hey, we did a study that shows you are Great!"
"Really? That is Great!"
"Yes, it will cost you $100K per ad to use that."
"ok. We'll just raise our ETF and other services to cover that."

Let's compare VOICE quality of Lan Line (over fiber) to calls over cell.
One is clear, the other sounds like someone is talking with a mouth filled with jello.

Cell reception is better, but the quality of the voice is horrible.

More interesting is AT&T's call quality

At least according to this survey, it appears that AT&T's quality is far behind the other carriers. Does anyone know the numbers behind the rankings? In other words, on a scale of 100, is AT&T 50 and the rest are 85+ or are the scores tighter than suggested by the 1 to 5 star rating provided by J.D. Power? (AT&T only received two stars and Verizon ranked five in most regions.)

If was in charge of AT&T Wireless, I'd be pissed and heads would be rolling. They should be investing in their network at a feverish pace to improve the apparent coverage and quality gap. There's just no excuse for this and it leaves me wondering if it wasn't for the exclusive iPhone deal, where would they be?

Right now AT&T should feel a bit like Toyota. They better do something and do it fast.

They should do something, but improving a national network takes time. Verizon has been good at duping people into thinking they are the best.

It it weren't for the iPhone, AT&T would be fine. Even before the iPhone they were the largest carrier in America and had relatively low churn and high adds.

If nothing else they should start touting their improvements.

Verizon IS the best. Period.

AT&T can "tout their improvements" all they want. They still have a sh1tty network as studies continue to show.

Congratulations on being in an area where AT&T is better than Verizon. You are in the minority. I travel all over PA, and AT&T is horrible overall compared to Verizon. It's not even close!

I used to have AT&T, then I switched to Verizon a couple months ago.

Its alright, no better then AT&T though. I get less bars in my house with Verizon then when I had AT&T.

I do miss SIM cards though...

For their draconian policies and outlandish prices I am not sure why you are crowing; a fool and their money soon part ways.

I live in the Dallas area and despite being near AT&T's HQ my call setup times are 10-20 seconds. Call setup is how long it takes for it to start ringing. My contract is up in Aug, and I'm back to Verizon after that, iPhone or no iPhone.

The stupid thing is that a data session goes through immediately, it's almost like they're queuing on voice trunks or something stupid like that.

Good luck w/ Verizon. Their call setup times can be quite long as well.

I'm a former VZW customer, and their calls always went in instantly.

Only funny thing is that both had the same deadzones near my house where I always got a dropped call.

13% of calls have problems nationally

That is a pretty sad statistic. All carriers averaged 13% nationally for problems during a call. And AT&T ranged from 13% to 27% problem calls depending on region. Maybe the phone makers and the cell service providers should spend more time improving the quality of devices and the network and spend less time on adding new features and speed.

TMobile fan here

I've been with TMO for about 3 years. I was with what became VZW for 15. While VZW has the most mature network out there, their customer service AND technical service departments are worthless. Clueless. Idiots. Boneheads.

This, along with VZW believing they were entitled to my business without having to put in any effort, at any price they choose, with any level of client service they choose, makes for a big loser. Once my contract was up, I moved to TMO and couldn't be happier.

Yeah, when you switch carriers you have to consider a different set of dead zones. No big deal. And TMOs data network isn't the fastest yet (big whoop).

But overall, they deliver 95% of what I need, with lower pricing and STELLAR customer and technical service.

A winner in my book. Oh, and VZW, you did something that pissed my wife off, so she switched to TMO. Guess what? She's happier too!

So go ahead and pay JD Power as much money as you wish to shower you with all the love you wish. I know the truth, and you have a huge hill to climb before I'll ever consider your offerings again. Get to work.

Dropped Calls

J.D. Power has it right about dropped calls with smartphones. I am with Verizon in the mid atlantic and my blackberry will drop a call sometimes at home while my wife's regular phone never does. At home I am 4.5 miles from the tower.

As usual it just depends

This study is worthless. I have better call quality and never drop a call with AT&T. I had Verizon for years. There was nothing special about their call quality. It was "ok". Didn't really drop calls with them either. I think AT&T will forever be subject to lower class ratings, merely because of their behemoth name AT&T. People LOVE to slam Wal Mart, but yet they still shop there. Having had both services, AT&T has better phones, roll over minutes, and over the last couple of years, their customer service has improved. And the whole 3G thing is a joke. I get up to 384K on EDGE. Not always, and yes it can be slow at times. But it is faster than Verizon's 1X (2G) network was. I'm more impressed by AT&T's 3G than I am with Verizon's 3G. There's more to the story than just a red and blue "map" on a commercial.

I am surprised

At how much mis-information there is out there.

I have had AT&T. T-Mobile and Now Verizon.

By far, Verizon has been the best for me and I am able to drive from Long Island to Philadelphia without ever getting cut off (occasionally)..
with T-Mobile - you are off the air more than you are on the air. Look at a map of my area - the cell sites don't even overlap.
AT&T is the same way -

But that's not to say there are not good areas for AT&T and TMO also.

I could call you on my friends DROID on Verizon and you'd have a very different opinion if I called you from my Blackberry.
One of the phones mentioned produces land line like quality and the other sounds like you are gargling with peroxide.
same network.

So to all of you out there who hate the network because your wives were wronged or because a few of your customers sound like shit on the phone - - - let's try to get a little more scientific and statistically relevant before we develop a gang mentality to bash any carrier.

Verizon Vs. Others

I have used Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile with both BlackBerry and non-smartphones in and around NYC, LI, NJ and traveled to major cities throughout the US and Canada. Verizon has the best coverage in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states and in many rural areas. Outside the East, especially in metropolitan areas, there is less difference among the carriers. When it comes to data speed, Verizon's 3G is not as fast as they claim. For one thing, 3G is not always available and when it isn't, the data drops to 1X which is very slow. AT&T and T-Mobile's data speeds are as fast or faster than Verizon's in areas where they have coverage.

In short, if you use your mobile phone for voice and you want to be able to use it around the country, Verizon is the best bet. If you use a smartphone mostly for data, you have more variables to consider.

Stright from the approvers mouth . . . .

As per a JDP rep when I asked him what he was thinking when he approved and awarded a Customer Service Award to Echostar when they had just been voted, by several major news outlets, the Worst Customer Service for several years running . . . that "Anyone Can Buy one of these".
